Our puppy was born with three legs and a spare.
On day one, we took our puppy to the vet. The vet said that the leg has no skin. He expected that if the puppy survives, the extra leg will dry up and fall off on its own, or need to be amputated. The vet gave us antibiotics for the puppy.
By Day three the extra leg looked like this:
But within hours after taking this picture, the momma dog licked the outer layer off, very similar to what you would think would be done at a burn unit, where the skin is sloughed off everyday as a part of treatment. We are watching our momma dog so she doesn’t get carried away. We really do not know what to expect. This left a bloody stub. We are concerned about our little tripawd puppy and have already begun different massage and physical therapy techniques on him to help him keep up with his littermates.
We are rooting for you, little pup. I have absolutely no advice, as I’ve never been in a situation similar to your’s but we are definitely pulling for you, hoping that you will kick butt. Go Baby Tripawd!!! BTW, this little pup needs a name! 🙂
Rio’s momma
Maybe “Trio???” That’s a good name….
we’ve never seen anything like this either…but, as ‘black dog people’, we are definitely sending our best ET juju to the little fellow. we agree, Trio sounds good!!

Thanks for all you’re doing for this pup! We look forward to following his progress.
My son thought of naming him Legolas, from the Lord of the Rings. He is quite the comedienne. I didn’t know if in the three legged dog community it is considered rude to give a dog a name that features it’s disability. However all of the kids really love the name Legolas, and it is kind of funny. We shall see. He could be called Lego for short.
Ohhhh Lego, we hope that everything works out. You are just so darn cute, we’re glad your Momma started a blog so we can watch you grow up.
